Alma Pepperell Encouragement Award

The inaugural Alma Pepperell Encouragement Award was held at the Drouin Golf Club on the 2nd October 1978. This Award was named after Alma Pepperell who was a talented player, a winner of many championships, an office bearer with Drouin and the Association who had devoted much time and effort to ensure the success of the Country Teams each year. To play in Country Teams was a honour. To qualify you must have played in Pennant in your local district. Pennant is a game between all Golf West Gippsland teams and played as a Match Play format. As Captain and selector over several years, Alma had to be good at negotiating with aspiring contenders, with sorting out who would be playing in Country Teams and looking after the welfare of her players while also playing as part of the team – quite a formidable task!

Because of Alma’s record in the area of Country teams it was decided to name this “Limit marker’s” event in her honour – the “Encouragement” in the title was to “encourage the newer players to not only participate but to venture out and play at other clubs.

The Alma Pepperell Encouragement Trophy is a Stableford event over 9 holes. It is designed to encourage GA 33 – 54 handicappers to play in West Gippsland Events.
