The inaugural Alma Pepperell Encouragement Award was held at the Drouin Golf Club on the 2nd October 1978.  This Award was named after Mrs Alma Pepperell who was a talented player, a winner of many championships, an office bearer with her Club and the Association and had devoted much time and effort to ensure the success of the Country Teams Coltman Cup each year.  Prior to becoming an entity of its own West Gippsland had at times been grouped with South Gippsland and East Gippsland as one team in the Country Week event.  As Captain and selector over several years, Alma had to be good at negotiating with aspiring contenders, with sorting out the claim of other districts, and looking after the welfare of her players while also playing as part of the team – quite a formidable task!

Because of Alma’s record in the area of Country teams it was decided to name this “Limit marker’s” event in her honour – the “Encouragement” in the title was to “encourage the newer players to not only participate in golf but to strive to improve their game and also importantly, put something back into the sport”.

The Alma Pepperell Encouragement Trophy is a Stableford event over 9 holes. It  is designed to encourage GA 33 – 54 handicappers to play in West Gippsland Events and also to play at other Clubs.
