2024 Country Week Wrap Up

Men's Country Week

After claiming the shield at home last year, in 2024 GWG headed to the Geelong region to defend the title.   The team included Ryan Hammond, Mike Santo, and Mark Allen, Drouin; Peter Brown, and Dael Scurlock, Morwell;  Lenny White, Warragul; Dylan Spence, Traralgon; Paul Andrijczak Yallourn and Michael White (Manager).

A tough round 1 match up against last year’s runners up Ballarat saw us go down 1.5-5.5, with a win to Mark Allen, and a half from Dylan Spence, putting us on the back foot for the rest of the week, making it difficult to win the shield, and setting up a pressure matchup in round 2 against South Gippsland.

In a very tight tussle we managed to scratch a 4-3 win, helped by Paul Andrijczak winning his last 2 holes for a half! Other winners were Ryan Hammond,Michael Santo,Peter Brown and a half to Mark Allen.

Round 3 we played Goulburn Murray, who were desperate for a win after a bad loss in round 1 against the eventual winners Murray Goulburn. They proved too strong for us and recorded a 6-1 win against us. Mark Allen, providing the only points for us.

With the bye in round 4, the team relaxed for the afternoon, and prepared and looked forward to a matchup with Murray Goulburn, needing a halved match to guarantee avoiding relegation.

Round 5 on Wednesday morning started well with first gamer, 15yo Lenny White leading the team off, and winning his first 3 holes, eventually recording a 5/4 result. (This was a reflection of his father Michael, and his own selection as a 16yr old by the legendary Bob Goldie back in 1994. Michael is now the Country Week Team Manager).

The rest of the team followed and with wins to Ryan Hammond, Mark Allen, and Paul Andrijczak, GWG recorded a great victory 4/3 against the winners of the shield, Murray Darling.

Round 1 was played at Clifton Springs Golf Club against South Gippsland. Even though we went down 6 – 1. They were well fought matches going down to the last few holes. June Tickell was a victor on this day.

Round 2 was played at Curlewis Golf Club against East Gippsland. Once again we lost 5.5 – 1.5 with Kerri winning and Annelie having a squared match.

Round 3 was played at Curlewis Golf Club in the afternoon against South Western. The result could have gone either way but alas we went down 4-3. Victors were Leanne and Jenna, Shirley and June’s matches were square.

Round 4 was played at The Sands Torquay against Dalhousie. We had a win 5-2. Victors were Annelie, Shirley, June, Kerri and Leanne. It was a very excited team to finally have a win.

The overall result saw us 4th on the ladder which will keep us in Division 2 for 2025.

This was my 3rd time to be a part of Country teams. The comradery with the team was amazing.  They are always congratulating each other whether a win or loss and way too much laughing at the end of the day.
